Kentucky Sites Honored By Get Out! Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards

Several Kentucky tourism attractions have been recognized in Get Out! Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 16, 2010 ) FRANKFORT, Ky. – Several Kentucky tourism attractions have been recognized in Get Out! Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

The awards, announced Feb. 25, were selected by readers of the online magazine. The magazine covers outdoor adventure travel in the Ohio River Valley area that includes Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

“I am so pleased that our visitors recognize the excellent adventure tourism opportunities we have in Kentucky,” said First Lady Jane Beshear. “These are just some of the great places in our state where families can get outside for fresh air and exercise.”

The Best Overall Destination is Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin. Besides the rare “moonbow” at the falls, the magazine noted “high-quality hiking trails, a nice lodge and cabins, and a whitewater run below the falls.” Cumberland Falls has 17 miles of hiking trails, ranging from some that are less than 1 mile to the 10.8-mile Moonbow Trail.

The Best Adventure Town award went to Louisville. The magazine quoted Stacey Shepherd Yates, vice president of marketing communications for the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau: “Louisville is truly living up to its goal of becoming the City of Parks. From the nation’s largest municipal urban forest to work on one of the most expansive urban park projects in North America, Louisville is proving it’s possible for people to ‘get out’ and enjoy the city.”

The Best Urban Park award went to E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville – the second year in a row the park has won. “It is an all-around park serving organized sports teams and others with trails, a dog park, a BMX course and an archery range,” the magazine said. The park has a fitness trail and a nature trail, as well as outdoor programs, an outdoor pool, picnic shelters and a community center for meetings and receptions.

The Best Backpacking Trail award went to the Pine Mountain Trail State Park in eastern Kentucky. About 44 miles of the trail are complete from Breaks Interstate Park to U.S. 119. Plans call for the trail to cover 110 miles.

The award for Best Cave went to the world’s largest cave system -- Mammoth Cave at Mammoth Cave National Park. The park is off Interstate 65 near Cave City. Guests can take cave tours for a fee and there is lodging, dining and camping available. There are also 80 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and cycling.
