February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ One company is taking a new approach to food pasteurization. ScanTech Sciences Inc. has developed a way to treat foods via "cold" electronic pasteurization.

An article in the South Florida Business Journal says ScanTech uses an electron beam and X-Ray tech to send a current through fruits, vegetables and meats to prevent food-borne illness and insect infestation. A side-benefit of this treatment is that it yields a longer shelf-life for the products, which could help in terms of food exports. According to ScanTech, strawberries could last up to three weeks longer with cold pasteurization.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 76 million food illnesses occur annually in the US from exposure to bacteria, a high number partially due to old methods of food treatment - such as methyl bromide treatment - being phased out.
