Commodities Stocks Shine After Upbeat ISM Data (HL, MEE, CNX, PCX, ANR, BTU)

The Institute for Supply Management reports that its factory index jumped to 58.4% in January from 54.9% in December, well above expectations of 56.0%.

Specifically, coal stocks were in special attention after analysts at Davenport said in a note to clients that they are bullish on the met coal market, citing particularly Massey Chief Executive Don Blankenship’s comments that his company is expecting global steel production to rise 12% in 2010 and expectations of demand in China. Davenport also upgraded Consol.
Hecla Mining Company (NYSE:HL) soared over 12.50% to $5.13 as Gold prices moved higher on the first trading session of February.
Massey Energy Company (NYSE:MEE) surged 8% to $41.58 on higher volume.
CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE:CNX) jumped over 7.21% to $49.97.
Patriot Coal Corporation (NYSE:PCX) moved up 9.50% to $16.96, Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) surged over 4% to $43.85.
Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE:ANR) rose 4.70% to $42.51.
