The new PSM graduate degree seems to be gaining popularity – even threatening traditional graduate degree programs, like the MBA or PhD. Lack of funding is keeping it at a slow growing pace. What is the answer?

Just over a decade old, the fairly new PSM graduate degree, which is tailored to provide students with advanced training in the sciences without a PhD and vital business skills without an MBA, continues to grow in popularity. As part of the America COMPETES Act, in 2007, Congress authorized the National Science Foundation to provide grants to 4-year colleges or universities to develop or establish PSM degree programs. It was not until February 2009 that the NSF received funding of $15 million for the grant program as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These funds are scheduled to be spent in this fiscal year. At the moment, the NSF is looking for program proposals for willing 4-year universities and colleges.
Statistics reveal that, the current $15 million held by the NSF will only be enough for 21 awards. Considering that the growth of the program is occurring exponentially, that money will not go a long way.
The Department of Energy represented at the biennial meeting by their director [Valdez] in the department of Office for Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, expressed interest in hiring PSM graduates with a bias on those who study green technologies. “The PSM might bridge the translational divide between the traditional disciplines we support and the emerging green jobs we need,” said Valdez, hinting potential funding from the department in the near future.
Advocates of PSM programs declare that it has never been this easy to earn a graduate degree and being placed in the high demand fields. Even amidst a recession the success rates of the program should persuade state and local leaders to embrace them greatly.
