Nationwide Search For the Next Great Advocate Songwriter Ends February 1st

Music2Life Songwriting Contest Now Accepting Submissions from Songwriters in All Genres with Passion for Change

Music2Life: WANTED - Musicians who stand up for change

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 27, 2010 ) BALTIMORE, MD – Every two years the non-profit Music2Life Songwriting Contest embarks on a mission to find the newest and brightest songwriters from multiple genres who focus on social and political concerns. Winners receive a slot at the 2010 Kerrville Folk Festival near San Antonio, TX, money to donate to their chosen charities, and much more. 2010 marks the fifth biennial contest, and the February 1st submission deadline is rapidly approaching.

Genres like folk and acoustic are the norm, but this year the contest is reaching out to country, rock, hip hop, reggae and any other genre that fits into the political or social realm. Grammy-rich celebrity review panelists from a variety of genres will be on hand like country star Kathy Mattea, acclaimed singer/songwriter Judy Collins, independent songwriter legend Christine Lavin, up-and-coming Texas rapper Baby Jay and many more. The Music2Life contest has awarded prizes and recognition to 40 finalist songwriters over four contests, and in a few cases, non-winning songs were recorded by national artists involved with the program.

The unique Music2Life contest recognizes songs with important messages to inspire activism. Many song contests reward winners with guitars, audio workstations, and other goodies, but Music2Life rewards the winners with donations to their chosen causes and charities, resulting in outward-directed social activism through music to help the community.

Founder, Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary), established Music2Life in 2001 and its parent organization, Public Domain Foundation, in 1971. Public Domain Foundation was founded to receive and distribute the royalties of one of Stookey’s most enduring songs “The Wedding Song” to charity. For more than 30 years, Stookey has given almost 1.5 million dollars to various family and children's programs throughout the world.

In conjunction with the contest there is also a Music2Life Fellows program that accepts music-related activist projects for funding. The Fellows program is a highly competitive award that offers select Musician Activists a stipend of up to $5,000 to apply their music to an issue of social concern. Fellows and their projects are also filmed as part of Music2Life’s documentary series on how music makes change. Three-time Music2Life finalist Amy Carol Webb is the first recipient of the Fellows grant, and the documentary on her project to bring music workshops to women in Florida prisons will be released soon. Musicians interested in the Fellows program can apply through the Music2Life Songwriting Contest.

Don’t miss the opportunity to have your song showcased at this year’s competition. Submission is quick and easy. Get involved and make a difference with your music.
