Manifest Destiny: Float in the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark with Craig Madsen’s Montana River Outfitters

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- When the United States completed the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, nobody was sure just how much land had changed hands. To solve this mystery, President Thomas Jefferson dispatched a team to explore the Missouri River.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- This nearly three year journey is better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Between May 24 and June 13, 1805, Lewis and Clark spent three weeks exploring what would become the Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River. Now, thanks to Craig Madsen’s Montana River Outfitters, guests can go rafting on this section of the Missouri – in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark.

This section of the Wild and Scenic Missouri River is famous to history buffs not only for its Lewis & Clark lore but for its Native American, steamboat history and for the famous artists who painted the White Cliffs area. White sandstone cliffs, volcanic intrusions and eerie rock formations still intrigue those who float by today. This is a relatively calm rafting trip providing lots of time for relaxation and exploration. Experience first hand the enchantment of this area with hikes to old homesteads, Native American sites, and the spectacular geological formations. Swim, fish, hike or just relax and enjoy Montana River Outfitter’s comfortable, luxurious camps.

Montana River Outfitters also offers guests the opportunity to go rafting the Missouri's little known rapids including the white water that forced Lewis and Clark's portage near Great Falls. These river trips take rafters past Sacajawea Springs and Lewis and Clark campsites on this scenic and historic section of the Missouri River. Visitors will literally be able to take a step back in history to areas so remote that little has visibly changed since Meriwether Lewis and William Clark first charted the area.

Montana River Outfitters offers 1/2-7 day guided, partially guided, and self guided river trips by raft, canoe, kayak, or power boat. Half day trips start at $59 per person. Fully-guided trips include superb outdoor cuisine and luxury camps complete with most everything except sleeping bags from $795 for three days.
