Achillion Pharmaceuticals Inc (ACHN) reported promising results from an early-stage trial of its hepatitis C drug. The company said the preliminary results showed proof of concept for the drug, ACH-1625. In the early-stage trial, patients received ACH-1625 for five days. The preliminary results showed a "dramatic reduction in viral load after five days" and the drug demonstrated a slow viral rebound, the company said. The drug was well-tolerated at all doses and there were no serious adverse events. Shares skyrocketed this mourning, gapping up to $3.74 or roughly 70 percent on massive volume.

First quarter revenue increased 154% to $4,525,000 from $1,784,000 in the first quarter of last year. Net income for the quarter was $379,000 or $0.14 per common share compared to a net loss of $134,000 or $0.05 per common share in the quarter ended October 31, 2008. Shares were up 17 percent on well above average trading volume.
