A young Costa Rican boy enjoys some coconut milk. On every Tropical Adventures trip, families have a homestay where they are immersed in 'Tico' culture.

Volunteer in Costa Rica

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 03, 2009 ) CARTAGO, Costa Rica— Tropical Adventures is known for their innovative trips that allow families to become truly involved with this unique country and its people by working with them as volunteers and living with host families. Costa Rica is a family-oriented country and almost all host families have children, so the exchange is good for adults and kids.
Volunteers will work with the Wildlife Rescue Center assisting with a variety of tasks, including feeding and caring for animals. Time spent at the Center offers guests an opportunity to play a role in the preservation of species in danger of extinction. Furthermore, the care of injured wild animals and education on the struggle of the animals is a significant objective in helping to restore the balance between humans and nature. The scenic area on which the Wildlife Rescue Center resides is located on eight acres of property near the Arenal Volcano. The wildlife family consists of birds, caymans, monkeys, boars, herons, ducks, a kinkajou named Benjamin, raccoons, dogs and cats. The project is officially recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, Energy & Telecommunications (MINAET) as well as the Monteverde Conservation League, the non-profit administrators of the world-renowned Children´s Eternal Rainforest (Bosque Eterno de los Niños.). Covering 54,000 acres, the Rainforest is the largest private reserve in Costa Rica.
To experience the best possible cultural immersion, Tropical Adventures accommodates travelers with local host families. In the homes, guests will learn the way of life and traditions of “Ticos”, as the locals are called. Those hoping to get a better grasp on their Spanish are able to take lessons in the morning and then volunteer in the afternoon. During free time, hiking, rafting, horseback riding or ziplining can be arranged. Two guest comments exemplify the impact of these trips: "The best part of going on a volunteer trip with my grandson was the quality time we got to spend together doing something meaningful.” “We started to feel more like part of the community than we would have if we had just been there as tourists. Our family got to experience a culture very different from our own from the inside…Perfect.”

The cost of the Wildlife Rescue Center trips is $1,195 per person, with an additional $340 for those who choose to participate in Spanish lessons.
