“The Company focuses on innovation and new product development, with the introduction in February of the Variable Response Technology foam, which is designed to provide a softer sleep surface. Earlier in January of 2008, the Company released the Sealy Posturepedic innerspring line –a line designed to reduce tossing and turning through reductions of “pressure points.” Moreover, in 2008, the Company increased its research and development by opening its Center of Excellence pressure-mapping laboratory.
“During fiscal 2008, the industry has been affected by rising commodities prices, especially petroleum and steel, which increased the costs of polyurethane foam, polyester, polyethylene foam and steel innerspring parts. During the recent quarter, however, costs of steel and polyurethane and latex foam declined, and are expected to stabilize during the remainder of fiscal 2009. The Company noted that suppliers of foam and drawn wire might limit production to maintain higher prices, passing these costs down the manufacturing chain.”
