CIM does not have to pay corporate taxes on the money paid out as dividends to shareholders. Thus, the Company would not be subject to income tax if it distributes at least 90% of its REIT taxable income to its shareholders. This avoids the ‘double taxation’ issue associated with many dividend payouts.
“During the second quarter 2009, the Company completed a third public offering and third private offering April 21, 2009, and a fourth public offering and fourth private offering June 2, 2009. In these offerings, CIM raised net proceeds of approximately $851.0 million and $612.4 million, respectively, and it has completed investing these proceeds. Thus, CIM started the quarter with a market capital of roughly $500 million and after the Company successfully launched and priced two secondary equity offerings, it ended the period with a market capitalization of greater than $2 billion.”
