In a sensible nod to the weather, whilst some early bird enthusiasts have already been getting their kit off and testing out the trail, the official opening won’t be until May next year.
The new nudist trail meanders up and down the Harz mountain range in central Germany and connects the village of Dankerode and the Wippertal dam in Saxony-Anhalt.
And, despite the warm welcome and heightened anticipation the trail has received from nudists, needless to say it has met with its fair share of criticism from those that prefer to stay fully clothed.
Some locals have been protesting against the trail ever since its creation was announced months ago.
Whilst the trail is designed for and encourages naked hikers, clothed hikers can use it too, but they have to be prepared for the fact that they may well encounter walkers wearing nothing but backpacks.
There are even special signs warning that the trail is for nudists in case some hikers are not aware when they start out. One sign reads, “If you don't want to see people with nothing on then you should refrain from moving on!”
Heinz Ludwig, who runs a nearby campsite, has led the project to create the nudist trail. He heralds it as a fantastic boost for tourism in the area.
“I think it's a great way to promote tourism here and there has already been a lot of interest in it.”
