Government Initiatives to Boost Medical Tourism in South Korea
With government support and world-class healthcare facilities, South Korea is set to become a leading player in medical tourism industry, says RNCOS.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 16, 2009 ) New Delhi, India - According to our new research report, “Emerging Medical Tourism in South Korea”, government supportive policies will continue to give impetus to the South Korean medical tourism industry that has been consistently maintaining strong growth pace for last few years. Despite the gloomy outlook for the world economy, the number of foreign patients at six leading Korean hospitals jumped 41% year-on-year in May 2009, an increase of 32% from the figure recorded between January and April.
The South Korean government is introducing several policies and amending laws to promote the country as a preferred medical tourism destination. For instance – the government has recently lifted ban on the advertisements of medical services, enabling hospitals to hire advertising agencies to help them to attract medical tourists. In the past, although advertisements targeting the general public were allowed, medical institutions could not hire agencies to seek patients or directly target marketing efforts at specific groups. With this kind of initiatives, the Ministry of Health and Welfare aims to receive about 100,000 medical tourists by 2011.
The Ministry of Tourism has recently inaugurated an online and offline one-stop service center for medical travelers, making information on medical tourism in Korea more easily accessible to international travelers.
Apart from the government support and various policies, South Korea has an advantage of a large pool of expert practitioners and advanced technology that capture attention of foreign patients looking for affordable treatment. We have found that around 10,000 foreigners visited South Africa for plastic surgery in 2008, indicating to the potential of plastic surgery to emerge as the largest contributor for the medical tourism industry in coming years.
“Emerging Medical Tourism in South Korea” provides an in-depth analysis of present and future prospects of the South Korean medical tourism industry. It studies the medical tourism industry in detail with focus on different parameters like inbound tourism, expenditure by inbound tourists, medical tourists, expenditure by medical tourists, various healthcare procedures and healthcare infrastructure.
The report also gives forecast for medical tourist arrivals, revenue from medical tourists, number of hospital beds, number of doctors, GDP growth, disposable income and population of South Korea.
