(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 23, 2009 ) INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev.— Award-winning adventure operator Myths & Mountains visits two unique nature centers in Peru’s Amazon rain forest to explore the region’s astonishingly diverse wildlife on its Peru: Into the Wild Heart of the Amazon adventure. Only a short 25-minute flight from Cusco, the Tambopata River is home to more than 500 bird and 1,000 butterfly species. After a night in Lima and flight to Puerto Maldonado, it’s a 2 ½ hour motorized canoe trip to Refugio Amazonas. There’s an evening caiman search and a hike on the Brazil nut trail before traveling by boat to Tambopata National Reserve.
The lodge here has an impressive canopy tower for bird watching. Their knowledgeable guides are trained naturalists, necessary due to the diverse wildlife. The world’s largest macaw clay lick is here, drawing hundreds of examples of up to 15 species of colorful macaws and parrots each morning. Hikes will include the Terre Firme Trail to look for tamarinds and very rare tapir tracks and to the palm swamp, a nesting and roosting spots for blue and gold and yellow-bellied macaws. The trip then returns to the Refugio for a canoe trip to look for hoaitzin, caimans and otters before the return to Lima and a private city tour. The trip is $1675 per person double, based on a group of four. Year-round custom dates are available. Although macaws are always at the swamp, the October to March nesting season is the most exciting time for viewing.
