SEDONA, Ariz.— In 1996, Cheryl Fleet guided jeep tours through the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, and about every two hours she saw a new co-ed group of visitors. She noticed, though, a different dynamic when a group was all women. Strangers to each other just two hours early, women bonded easily and often met for lunch after a tour. She noticed that quiet women, who likely have said little in a co-ed group, had plenty to share.
The idea for taking women on adventure trips of their own was born in that jeep in 1996.Today, Fleet operates Canyon Calling Adventures for Women, the first in the world to offer multi-activity adventure trips for women. Fleet guides groups of women travelers for the trip of a lifetime all over the world, including Arizona, Utah, Canada, Peru, Switzerland, Australia and her native New Zealand. Her experience with women’s adventures have made her a sought-after expert on the topic.

The group should have a common goal – not just to see Arizona but how to see it – hiking or driving through the national parks for example.”

Canyon Calling trips aren’t boot camps, but are appropriate for all moderately fit women. “If you can hike 5 to 8 miles in a day over undulating ground, you’ll do fine,” Fleet told Arizona Adventure Seeker. “When women travel together, they are extremely forgiving of a slower hiker as long as she’s trying. They are very inclusive and vested in the success of the group.” Fleet reported really enjoying the inter-generational sharing that takes place. “It’s good to watch the 35-year-old listen to the experience of the 65-year-old. As with many things in life, it’s about what is in your heart.”
