Suson Eye Specialists Discuss Lasik Surgery Options
Dr. John Suson of Suson Eye Specialists in Wauwatosa, WI, discusses the importance of choosing the best eye care possible when it comes to corrective Lasik eye surgery, and what mistake to NOT make.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 14, 2009 ) Dr. John Suson of Suson Eye Specialists in Wauwatosa, WI, discussed a very common concern in evaluating the Lasik surgery techniques. Dr. Suson said "I recently had a patient tell me the cost of Lasik was his biggest concern. He liked the idea of the top end blade-free technology, but if it wasn’t within his price range, then he couldn’t have it anyway. My answer to this patient: 'Your choice is clear. Do NOT have Lasik at all…at least until you can save up some money to have it done right.'”
Dr. Suson explained "it may seem surprising to have a surgeon advise somebody not to have surgery, but I feel strongly about this particular subject because I have been a Lasik patient as well as a Lasik surgeon. Most people are surprised to learn that Lasik can involve blades. After all, you thought you were getting laser surgery. The blade-free technology has been around for several years now, and once we switched, we eliminated the bladed technology completely. The reasons: precision and safety. Not only do I perform a lot of Lasik surgery, but I have also had Lasik myself. Having extensive experience with both bladed and laser only systems, both as a surgeon and patient, I would strongly recommend to everyone that you should either have the blade-free Lasik procedure or NOTHING at all. Think about it. You’ve done okay with glasses or contact lenses up to this point and you want to make a change to a new level for a reason. If you decide to take the next surgical step, you should do it right and use the absolutely best technology available with the highest level of precision and safety."
Dr. Suson knows that cost is always an issue, but believes that in the case of surgery, it should be second to top notch technology and safety. He goes on to say "although you may hear false advertising claiming $500 Lasik, it is just that…false. You will find when you actually go for your consult (with a non-refundable exam fee) at these places, that the actual savings compared to our facility is only around $800 or MAYBE $1000. But to avoid the bladed technology, I think it is well worth it, even if that means saving a little bit of money each month for however long it takes to make up the difference. Otherwise, my suggestion to you is don’t have Lasik at all. You’ve done okay with glasses or contacts so there’s no rush. When you’re ready to move to the next level and have surgery, just make sure that you do it right."
"Do your research and understand the difference. Don’t ever compromise on surgical quality," Dr. Suson concluded.
