FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Tour de Fat, the one-of-a-kind traveling philanthropic bike tour sponsored by the New Belgium Brewing Company, will meander through its birthplace of Fort Collins, Colorado, on September 5, from 9-4 p.m. With its holiday status in the town and mission to celebrate the positive societal offerings of the bicycle and its use as a viable form of alternative transportation, the Tour de Fat, which starts in mid-July and ends mid-October, now rolls though 11 cities, including Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, Boise, Portland, Tempe and San Diego – all with the goal of raising money for bicycle and environmental charities. After donations exceeded over 250,000 last year in the 11-city tour, the Tour de Fat has now raised more than 1 million in charitable funds since its inception. The charities of choice for the Fort Collins leg of the Tour, the Overland Mountain Bike Club and Bike Fort Collins organizations, use the money from the Tour de Fat for bike trail maintenance, education, grant funding, and assistance to bikers on local trails.
According to Katy Schneider, Marketing and Communications Manager of the Fort Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Fort Collins Tour de Fat is a “one-of-a-kind experience where thousands of people from all walks of life all come together in one spot to celebrate beer, bikes, sustainability, and people.” With more than 10,000 bike-friendly participants who costume, celebrate all things bicycle, and toast the bike with New Belgium ale, the Tour de Fat encapsulates the ideals of the sustainability-minded town of Fort Collins and the New Belgium Brewery. “One and all are welcome to attend. The Tour de Fat has some of the best costumes and people watching you will ever find,” Schneider also adds.
True to its environmental-awareness focus, a solar-powered stage will provide sound for the day, and beer will be served in compostable cups, with a waste stream diversion goal of better than 85 percent for the one-day festival. One lucky Fort Collins resident, willing to donate his or her car to charity as a symbol of commitment to an automobile-free existence, will be chosen to receive a hand-crafted commuter bike as a fuel-free replacement.
So get ready for the most fun you may ever have on two wheels during the Tour de Fat. It will speak to your inner cyclist, beckon you with bike and beer, and then make you a convert with its simple message: Have fun and start peddling more! Participation in the Fort Collins Tour de Fat is free, with a suggested $5 donation.
