Lavender fields a bloom and handcrafted wines – a signature Olympic Peninsula pairing.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 08, 2009 ) July 8, 2009 – The Olympic Peninsula Wineries invite visitors to wind their way through beautiful fields of lavender en route to tasting some of the region’s best handcrafted wines during the nine-day Lavender Wine Tour, from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday, July 19. Six artisan wineries located in Port Townsend and Port Angeles will pour new and current releases in celebration of the region’s agricultural heritage. Doors will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
The wine tour kicks-off the Olympic Peninsula’s 13th annual Lavender Festival in Sequim, set to take place July 17-19. The festival is the largest lavender event in North America, attracting visitors from around the world each year. Olympic Peninsula Wineries will be featured in the Wine & Beer Garden during the Festival Street Fair, with wines available for tasting and for purchase by the glass or by the bottle. The Street Fair will take place in downtown Sequim, on Fir Street between Sequim and Third Avenues.
Those with time to drive the self-guided Lavender Wine Tour will enjoy wine paired with lavender in different ways, while experiencing the warm hospitality for which the wineries are known. Following are a few tour highlights.
In Port Townsend, enjoy Sorensen Cellar’s newly released 2008 Pinot Gris complemented with Vanilla Lavender Shortbread from Outrageous Offerings. Then, sample the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot and Fireweed Mead at FairWinds Winery before strolling through plantings of Grosso and Hidcote Pink Lavender on the winery grounds.
Port Angeles’ Black Diamond Winery, specializing in fruit wines produced with estate and locally-grown fruit, will feature its Strawberry-Rhubarb wine, a summer favorite.
Olympic Cellars of Port Angeles will feature award-winning new releases in the winery’s Dungeness and La Dolce Vida series. Taste the 2007 Dungeness Red, the 2006 Cabernet Franc, and a new Bordeaux blend of Handyman Red, big and bold. Two special limited edition wines will also be featured, a lavender-infused Müller-Thurgau, and Sparkling Twilight, a lively, refreshing and off-dry sparkling Syrah that bubbles with enthusiasm in celebration of your day’s adventure.
