(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 17, 2009 ) For those considering Lasik eye surgery, Dr. John Suson of Suson Eye Specialists, in Wauwatosa, WI, suggests Wavefront Guided Lasik treatments to achieve optimal night vision. Wavefront Guided Lasik treatments use a highly advanced method of scanning the eye for higher order optical aberrations. It has been known for some time that using the excimer laser to eliminate these optical aberrations gives better visual outcomes in situations of low light compared to conventional Lasik treatments.

"The Wavefront system that I use is called the Visx Star S4 IR Customvue™ system. Wavefront Guided Lasik patients will tend to have better vision in dark situations and also have better contrast sensitivity than those who get conventional Lasik surgery," Dr. Suson explains. "Contrast sensitivity is important when a person is trying to distinguish shades of gray. In the standard vision test, you read dark black letters on a white background. But the world is not necessarily so stark and many shades of gray exist. Similarly, there are shades of color that are similar going from black, to navy, to purple, etc. Improved contrast sensitivity can be important when trying to see objects of similar shades or color that sit in close proximity visually."

"An article in the April 2009 issue of Ophthalmology Magazine looked specifically at night time driving performance for wavefront Guided Lasik (wLasik) compared to conventional Lasik (cLasik). The wLasik patients significantly out-performed the cLasik patients. wLasik patients actually showed 0 to 3% reduction compared to 32 to 38% reduction for cLasik patients. And there was significant improvement in 11 to 31% of the wLasik group compared to only 2 to7% improvement in the cLasik group. These facts correlate with my general impression that the older conventionally treated patients complained of significantly more night driving difficult that those treated with the newer Wavefront Guided methods," Dr. Suson stated.

As Dr. Suson explained, many cheap centers will try to downplay newer technologies in order to operate low cost, assembly line facilities. But it is clear that the newer technologies do make a difference. Everything from the Wavefront guided systems, to eye trackers, to blade free Lasik has significantly improved outcomes and/or improved quality and safety.

"At Suson Eye Specialists, we are always looking toward those technologies that improve quality and safety whereas other centers look only at cost. It seems clear that the minimal cost savings is well offset by the significant increases in visual performance, night driving, and safety. You only have one set of eyes and you really only get one chance to have your Lasik," Dr. Suson concluded. "We all have to drive at night so you should want the best night driving vision possible. Don’t skimp on technology. It just doesn’t make sense."
