The organization was founded in 1999 by Dr. Matthias Hammer. Dr. Hammer, who has a military background and was educated at St Andrews, Oxford and Cambridge universities, wanted to combine his training as a biologist with some real-life, hands-on conservation work. When someone suggested, "why don't you take people on volunteer expeditions with you", the idea for Biosphere Expeditions was born. Ten years later, the organization has sent thousands of people into the field, and Biosphere Expeditions continues to grow.

“We spent time researching possible Public Relations agencies and in the end ATMS came up trumps because of its expertise in the travel segment and its reasonable rates,” says Dr. Matthias Hammer. “By working with ATMS we are hoping significantly to increase our media exposure in North America, where we have so far only had a low profile compared to the significant exposure we get in Europe and Australia.”
