Recognizing this problem, American InterContinental University, DeVry University, and Walden University first joined forces in January 2008 to help create scholarships for online university degree programs. Thanks to their combined efforts, in May 2008, more than 40 working mothers received scholarships to continue their education and improve their family’s lives.
These attempts to help working moms increase their job skills and education through an online degree, however, are just a beginning. More than 50,000 moms applied for those 40 scholarships, hoping for a chance to have the entire cost of their online degree program covered by one of these tuition awards.
The applications are judged on whether the applicant meets the qualifications of the university sponsoring the program in which he or she is interested. Of those who qualify, those with the most compelling essays are selected as scholarship recipients. Winners will be required to use their scholarships for the online degree program in which they indicated interest on their applications.
This online degree scholarship program has been so successful that more than 50 scholarships were also awarded in the fall of 2008. Capella University, American Sentinel University, Ashford University, Everest University Online, and Penn Foster College participated in these scholarship awards.
