In the early spring when the sap starts running in the maple trees, they were tapped to collect sap for making maple syrup. Water is boiled off the sap resulting in thick, sweet maple syrup. Native Americans boiled the water from their sap by dropping hot rocks in the container made of hollowed out logs.
