Memoirs of a Woman who went from Infancy to College Graduate, as she Recovered from a Closed-head Injury at the age of 25

This all changed with a “freak accident” which happened on her way to work.
The accident happened when a bail of hay fell out of a truck, bounced off her windshield and sent her car spinning out of control. The driver’s side of the car was crushed as the car slammed into a cement abutment. Lori was unconscious, bleeding and trapped before a rescue team removed her from the vehicle using the jaws of life. She was registered as legally dead, twice, while in the ambulance on her way to emergency.
The accident left her in a coma for 7 days while her body continued the fight for survival. Her memoirs tell of her learning a new way to make an income as she began working in a group home. “I felt this was a way to give back to the world for the hard work that was done for me,” Lori said. “At first, I tried to return to work as an executive secretary; however, it didn’t work out. My friends in the business world helped to direct me into health care. I worked in several group homes, one of which was for the closed head injured. During my employment as a caregiver, I was lead to a higher form of health care.”
During her time in the hospital, Lori was told she may never heal beyond an 8th grade education level. “I beat the odds and returned to college to earn an Associate’s Degree in business and a 2-year Certificate in Occupational Therapy to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant,” Lori said.
Lori’s goal is to help care-givers understand the challenges faced by people with closed-head injuries and to encourage the head injured to find their own level of comfort as they recover.
