New Australian Fires Near Melbourne

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 23, 2009 ) State College, Pa. -- AccuWeather.com reports a new set of wildfires threatened communities on the outskirts of Melbourne, evacuating hundreds and bringing the death toll to 210. A school with 350 students were evacuated and one person was killed as a result of the fires.
Two fires broke out near Melbourne, the second most populous city in the country. One fire broke out in the town of Upwey, 30 km away, while another blazed south of Daylesford, about 100 km from the city. A third fire burned in southeastern Victoria.
These fires come in the aftermath of a previous string of wildfires that killed over 200 people. A memorial service remembering the victims of the previous fires took place yesterday.
