(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2009 ) Key West FL-- Thomas Harris, captain of L’Esprit Libre II, a sailing charter yacht in the Florida Keys, was asked recently by some leaders of the nudist - naturalist community about the state of sailing charters for nudists.

“There seem to be two sorts. First, there are the large sailing boats – hundreds of feet long – that have special ‘nudist weeks’. These attract a fast cruising crowd, a transplant of the Fire Island pick-up scene.” He did not seem to think much of these. “And then there are the smaller charters, for one to three nudist couples, captained by a sympathetic sort; these can be quite nice, voir luxurious, but many are quite seedy.”

But really what is going on is that the luxury sailing yacht world is very straight and uptight. “It takes an unusually well-adjusted captain not to feel uncomfortable with a nudist charter party on his sailing yacht,” Harris said. “Say what you want; sailing in the tropics brings out the exotic and erotic in most people, and any captain who is not “bien dans sa peau” is going to be uncomfortable.” And then there is the issue of the captain fitting in if he is parading around in his white shirt with epaulettes.

A new niche market is opening, he contends. “Crewed sailing yachts for a week or more cruises for nudists are in short supply in the Florida Keys. This clientele has been used to going to the US Virgin Islands or farther down the Caribbean, but with current prices of air travel many are preferring to stay closer to home if possible.” There is also the problem of finding secluded enough anchorages to permit nudity.
