On Thursday, March 12th, he will offer free tips from his hit book on how to grow your business via the Web at the Royal Oak, Michigan Barnes & Noble.
Perlman’s wild ride to becoming a published author began by teaching his Internet Marketing workshop, called “eBoot Camp,” to local real estate agents and investors. Upon hearing of the success of these workshops, Sherrie Pryor, The Plymouth, MI DDA Director, asked Perlman to perform his eBoot Camp for her Plymouth merchants. “The workshop was a complete success,” said Pryor. “Corey taught us free techniques that we could do ourselves to make our Web site more search-engine friendly. The response from our attendees was off the charts.”
Upon seeing the reaction he was getting from local small business owners, Perlman decided the content would work for small businesses around the world. So during a rough Michigan winter, he planted himself at the Royal Oak Caribou coffee shop and began to write eBoot Camp, the book.
Once complete, Perlman began the steps to self-publish his manuscript. “I didn’t even approach the big publishers because I was told they wouldn’t go near a first time author,” says Perlman. So Perlman started the self-publishing process by paying a book designer a down payment to start designing his cover. Around that time, a friend of Perlman’s asked to see a copy of the book. After reading it, Perlman’s friend asked if he could forward it off to a book agent he knew in New York for review. Perlman gave it little thought, but of course, said yes.
The agent loved the book and approached one of the largest publishers in the world, Wiley Publishing. Wiley immediately offered Perlman a contract to publish eBoot Camp. Perlman remembers, “I was on vacation with my wife in Florida and decided to check email on my phone. I remember us both being a little shell-shocked, so neither of us got too excited. It wasn’t until I shared the news with my dad that we all started to celebrate.”
Six months later, the book has had a very successful opening week resulting in a #1 ranking on Amazon.com for four straight days in the marketing and retail categories. The avalanche of bad news on the economy has not dampened sales. “A struggling economy makes my book that much more timely,” says Perlman. “The book empowers people to roll up their sleeves and take action to find new business. Instead of spending thousands of dollars, they can spend a few hours a week and put those dollars back in their pockets.”
