CARTAGO, Costa Rica—New in 2009, voluntour vacation company Tropical Adventures has begun a program to make its entire operation carbon-neutral. Costa Rica is working to become the first carbon-neutral country and Tropical Adventures has joined this effort to reclaim the global environment through their new foundation-wide program called Planting Hope, which has been developed in partnership with the Costa Rican Ministry of the Environment (MINAET).
Carbon dioxide has been recognized as a major contributing factor to global warming. Just one mature tree can absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, releasing enough oxygen to support two human beings.
Knowing that the average volunteer comes to Costa Rica by air, which produces an average of one ton of carbon dioxide per person, Tropical Adventures has developed a program to offset the carbon footprint produced by the foundation’s staff and volunteers. Planting Hope will provide each volunteer the proper number of trees to plant in their respective volunteer project communities, based on the estimated carbon footprint for their trip. Volunteers will also have the option to purchase even more trees for donation and planting.
By recycling in each of their project offices, the use of energy-efficient lighting, Planting Hope and other efforts to be environmentally friendly, the organization has planned to achieve carbon neutrality.
