International Athletes to Join Shumake Relays
Annual Detroit track event to include young Bahamians
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 11, 2009 ) Detroit, MI - The Shumake Scholarship Relays has partnered with the government of the Bahamas to allow Bahamian athletes to participate in the annual Showdown in Motown track meet. This will be the first time international athletes will have participated in the competition.
The event will take place on April 25, 2009, in Detroit, Michigan. Bahamian high school athletes will compete with young people from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio in the 2009 track and field events.
“It is a pleasure for the Bahamas to be involved with the Shumake Relays,” said Leonard Stuart, liaison for the tourist office in the island nation southeast of Florida. “Our young people will have a chance to advance athletically and culturally.”
“This is a chance to take these athletes to another level,” noted Keith Williams, vice chair of the Wayne County Commission and the Shumake Relay’s co-chair. ”Now they will compete with a more diverse pool of athletes.”
The Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays is designed to become the premier class A track and field competition for high school students across the nation. The competition highlights both athletic ability and academic achievement.
Businessman Robert Shumake was an all-city track star in Detroit.
