Kevin Johnson endorsed by the Latino Journal for Mayor of Sacramento

The Latino Journal endorses Kevin Johnson for Mayor of Sacramento and encourages Latinos in the city to vote for Johnson.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 27, 2008 ) Sacramento, CA - Being the Mayor of Sacramento, California, the capitol city for the world’s 7th largest economy, is no easy task. It has been the one elected position of leadership that, carries a need to interact with the state’s legislature, an understanding of world class hosting, and of course, city management.

For 7 years, current Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo has taken a a “hands-off” out of the limelight approach to managing the city’s problems. This style of leadership has created confusion between city departments, developers, residents, and a loss of trust from downtown merchants. Moreover, Fargo not knowing that crime had risen 50 percent during her watch explains a need for change.

Latinos make up one-fourth of the city’s population, yet the number of Latinos in Fargo’s administration or appointments to commissions and boards are almost none existent. In addition, key departments under her, like the Police Department, make little if any effort to diversify its workforce. Finally, Mayor Fargo has made little effort to reach out to the Latino community, especially Latino business leaders, even to ask for their vote during her re-election.

Kevin Johnson is a formidable opponent, who demonstrates energy, passion, and knowledge of the fundamental issues facing this city of one-half million. Johnson knows the importance of interacting with state legislators, who reside here during legislative sessions, and the need to create a vibrant downtown that can serve as host to state, national and international dignitaries. Most importantly, Johnson knows he will need to take charge and negotiate tough decisions to ensure good schools and public safety.

As a life-time resident of Sacramento, Johnson grew up in predominantly Latino and African American neighborhoods, exposing him to the challenges low-income families experience every day. He has seen the school systems fail Latino students, a problem that has been associated with increased gang and criminal activities. Johnson will not ignore this growing population segment, but make sure they have a seat at the table.

As Mayor, Johnson told us, he would have two Latino-liaison positions, to keep pulse with the Latino community, plus establish a Latino Advisory Council, to guide him and other city leaders on economic, education, social, and health issues.

For these reasons, the Latino Journal endorses Kevin Johnson for Mayor and asks other Latinos in Sacramento to join them in voting for Johnson on November 4th.
