Houston author's new book aims to improve work management
HOUSTON — This week marks the nationwide release of author Bob Gilbert's new book, "Creating and Leading a High Performance Chemical Plant." This book is a factual story of the creation of a unique chemical plant in which the workers become responsible for managing their own work.
The book describes the origin and gradual evolvement of the work systems and the mistakes as well as the successes of the system. This plant was the subject of two articles by the American Management Association and, was made a case study by the American Productivity Center. It was also referenced in other articles and books.
Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.
Gilbert has worn several hats in his more than three decades of service in the country's chemical industry. He is a retired plant manager with 34 years of experience under his belt, working at Rohm and Haas, a chemical manufacturer in La Porte, Texas. Under his watch as plant manager, the company implemented a team-oriented system which gained notice in the media and became an organization system template of other companies. When he was not running the plant, Gilbert headed the Bayport Industrial Association and the manufacturing committee of the Houston Chamber of Commerce as their chairman. He also worked as a consultant with a number of companies in the U.S. and abroad. Aside from these achievements, he also did a teaching stint at the University of Houston and the Houston Community College. Gilbert, who is a registered professional engineer, holds a chemical engineering degree from Georgia Tech and a master's degree in business administration from Drexel.
