Tuvizo Looks At Safety Rules For Long Distance Overnight Relay Races
Personal safety gear are mandatory to participating in all of the most challenging and prestigious relay races in the world. Tuvizo takes a look at these races and how safety rules are keeping runners safe on the road.
The Tuvizo Reflective Running Vest provides high visibility in the day and excellent reflective qualities at night for running, cycling, walking, and other outdoor pursuits.
Long distance relay races are run for periods of between 12 and 48 hours, which means that many will be run at night. This adds an extra dimension to the races as far as safety is concerned, according to the article.
"Many of the big relay races across America insist on the use of personal safety equipment as a precondition to participation," says Jo Parkes from Tuvizo's PR division.
All relay races which run during night time, require that each participant wears a reflective running vest, headlamps and red flashing lights that clip on to the back. All support personnel, including the driver, must also wear high visibility clothing, according to the Tuvizo post.
Jesica D'Avanza, runner and blogger at Runladylike.com, in her "26 Tips for a Long Distance Relay Race" post observed that relay runners need to wear reflective apparel and blinking lights front and back. Knuckle lights were also mentioned as effective gadgets to increase visibility during overnight long distance runs. She also suggested using a headlamp to make night time running and navigation safer and easier.
The Ragnar Relay Series, held in the U.S. and Canada, covers thirteen races that are typically 200 miles (320 km) long and take place over two days and one night. There is a race in Colorado which takes the participants up to an altitude of 10,000 ft. At the other end of the spectrum is a race in Florida which includes many miles of beach running. There are several relay races which are strictly ‘night-time' only races, such as the Red Eye Relay in Indiana.
"We at Tuvizo believe that anyone running at night, be it a race or recreational running should be using these protective gear as a non-negotiable safety precaution," stressed Ms. Parkes.
Tuvizo is a newly emerging company specializing in high visibility clothing primarily designed for use in outdoor fitness and leisure pursuits. The company believes safety combined with user friendly design and functionality is paramount.
