Yoga Devotees May Be Ill-prepared For Drug-Resistant Germs
Drug-resistant microbes may be lurking in yoga classes across the US
Bacteria, streptococcus, and fungi are active agents for many illnesses. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the chief concern for many. Over 30 percent of the population carries staphylococcus bacteria, including MRSA, without symptoms. Seemingly resistant to almost all antibiotics, MRSA was once found only in hospitals but has recently spread to wrestling matches, fitness centers, and, unfortunately, yoga classes. MRSA infections usually present as skin infections like pimples and boils that are red, swollen and painful.
The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has identified crowding, contact, compromised skin, contamination, and lack of cleanliness as the "5 C's" in MRSA transmission. Most yoga studios are typically crowded. Yoga participants may work in pairs, resulting in skin to skin contact. The light, unrestrictive clothing favored in yoga allows more direct skin contact, as well as exposing scrapes, cuts, and abrasions. Open wounds and bare skin both contribute to the spread of diseases and MRSA.
To protect against picking up germs at a yoga studio, experts recommend hand washing immediately before and after class with hot water and soap for 20 to 30 seconds. Paper towels are preferred for drying, as cloth towels are known agents for spreading germs.
Shared and personal yoga mats should be cleaned after class and dried completely before storage. Although there are commercial mat sprays, Patti Johnson , Customer Satisfaction Specialist for BluePearlz Botanicals says, "Our customers who practice yoga prefer to avoid toxic chemicals with an inexpensive solution using water, rubbing alcohol, and Tea Tree Oil, a common ingredient in antiseptic sprays due to its antimicrobial properties. We recommend 100% pure MelaleucaTea Tree Oil, such as our BluePearlz Botanicals product on Amazon.com."
