Vitamin D Thought To Help Reduce Fatality From Prostate Cancer
Research reveals that adequate vitamin D could help to slow down the progression of some forms of prostate cancer.
As a result of this finding, the researchers involved in the study speculated that the exact opposite might happen if vitamin D is absent. In order to try and establish if this is indeed the case, they checked vitamin D levels of nearly 700 men between the ages of 40 and 75 who were undergoing prostate biopsies in order to determine whether or not they had cancer.
Alarmingly, nearly all of the participants were vitamin D deficient, meaning that their vitamin D levels were below 20 ng/ml. Tests also revealed that those who had a reading below 12 ng/ml, all had either more advanced cancer, or a more aggressive form of cancer compared to those men with higher vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D is essentially a hormone which the body produces when skin is exposed to direct sunlight. As a result of this, people who live in cold climates with long winters are at far greater risk of being vitamin D deficient. Black people are at even greater risk due to the fact that dark colored skin naturally blocks sunlight. Researchers now want to and determine if this could explain why black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than men with light skin.
Unlike regular vitamins, vitamin D is only present in a very limited number of foods, and only in very small concentrations. Furthermore, vitamin D derived from foods has been shown to be less active than vitamin D which the body produces. Because of this, millions of people have turned to vitamin D supplements, but are supplements an effective alternative to the real thing?
According to Mr. Oliver Adams, a Nutra Mina spokesman, vitamin D supplements are a viable solution. "These days we are able to create vitamin D in laboratories which is virtually identical to the vitamin D our bodies produce when we are exposed to direct sunlight. In the past this simply wasn't possible, and consumers were only able to buy vitamin D2 supplements rather than the vitamin D3 supplements which one can buy today" said Mr. Adams from his Hollywood office.
"Countless tests have clearly shown that you can increase your vitamin D levels simply by taking a good quality vitamin D supplement. We have heard many reports of people increasing their daily intake of vitamin D based on current government recommendations, only to discover that their vitamin D levels don't improve at all. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, current recommendations are way off the mark. If you take a vitamin D3 5000 IU supplement on a daily basis, you are definitely going to see your vitamin D levels increasing" said Mr. Adams over the phone.
According to recent studies, the overwhelming majority of people living in America are vitamin D deficient. Deficiency also increases dramatically during the winter months, especially in the northern parts of the country. "At the very least, we at Nutra Mina would recommend that everyone should have their vitamin D levels checked on a regular basis, and if those tests reveal a deficiency, then it is time to start thinking about taking a decent vitamin D supplement" said Mr. Adams.
