However it was never intended to be a day to be celebrated with cards and flowers as it was initiated originally by Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade from West Virginia who, with her husband, had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She had a dream of a day where families could enjoy family gatherings and reunions. In 1970 Marian started a campaign for a day to honor grandparents. She first managed to get the day recognised by political leaders in her home state in 1973, and then finally after much persistence, hard work and persuasion, President Jimmy Carter signed National Grandparents Day into law in 1978 and a presidential proclamation made it an official day on September 6th, 1979. Every year the president has to designate the first Sunday in September as National Grandparents Day, by issuing a proclamation.
Depite Marian's initial intention, over four million greeting cards will be sent this year and an array of gifts will be given. Ali Jane Signature Series has a gift pack comprising of a pineapple corer, a pineapple wedger, and a cocktail recipe book all presented in a stylish gift box that could make a gift with a difference for grandparents this National Grandparents Day.
