Diarrhoea Outbreaks Can Often Prove Fatal For Young Children Study Reveals MCT's Can Help
MCTs help to manage diarrhoea outbreaks
The study was conducted in a children's ward at a hospital in the Philippines. The children were all aged between 6 months and 47 months and they were each suffering from acute diarrhoea. The children were divided into two separate groups, with one group being fed a diet that contained high levels of medium chain triglycerides.
In addition to being fed medium chain triglycerides, the patients had their diets monitored and the patients were carefully checked to ensure that they didn't develop any complications from being fed this type of diet.
It was found that the cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels remained the same, and while the oil didn't have a dramatic effect on preventing or halting the diarrhoea outbreak, it did help the children to gain weight.
This is important because diarrhoea can cause a young child to lose considerable amount of weight and it can often mean that children fail to thrive. In addition, fatality rates among young children suffering from diarrhoea are extremely high in some countries.
A diet high in medium chain triglycerides did not cause any side effects such as fat tolerance, vomiting or high cholesterol and it was proved safe for the children to ingest the oil.
The researchers concluded that further studies need to be conducted before it can be determined whether medium chain triglycerides can be an effective way of helping to manage diarrhoea outbreaks in young children.
