Florida Based Company Advises Public To Check Ingredients In Personal Care Products
Simply Natural Life warns public of toxic nature of ingredients in menís shave products
"Many brands of personal care products that men pick up at their local supermarket or drug store are loaded with toxic ingredients." said CEO Loretta Green, "Our advice? Start reading labels on products, even in health food stores."
Thousands of toxic chemicals have replaced natural ingredients in commercial products. These ingredients in shaving soaps and creams can cause skin problems: irritation, redness, bumps and itching of the skin.
The average man uses about 6 products daily which could contain at many as 85 unique ingredients. Environmental Working Group (EWG) warns that some ingredients are hormonally active; and some of these are specifically linked to male reproductive system disorders. For instance, phthalates have been associated with altered hormone levels in men and boys and sperm damage.
Some key chemicals to avoid in men's shaving creams, shaving soaps and after shave: DMDM hydantoin, Synthetic "Fragrance", PEG/ceteareth/polyethylene, Triclosan, Triclocarban, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Oxybenzone, Parabens.
Synthetic fragrances are some of the most toxic chemicals in personal products. "Fragrance" or "Parfum" can be created from 4000+ ingredients. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has identified 884 of 2,983 tested fragrance chemicals as toxic. Potential risks include: Damage to central nervous system, leading to depression, hyperactivity, irritability, and other behavioral issues. Fragrances can also contain hormone disruptors and are among the top 5 allergens in the world.
Federal law doesn't require companies to list any of the chemicals in their "fragrance" mixture on product labels. Recent research from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found an average of 14 chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products, none of them listed on the label.
In human epidemiological studies, oxybenzone has been linked to irritation, sensitization and allergies.
Parabens are estrogen-mimicking preservatives used widely in skin care products. The CDC has detected parabens in virtually all Americans bodies. According to the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products, longer chain parabens like propyl and butyl paraben and their branched counterparts, isopropyl and isobutylparabens, may disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental disorders.
"If the product does not list its fragrance as being from essential oils, it is most likely synthetic. Look for 'Non-Toxic' or 'EcoCert' labels." said Ms. Green.
Nowadays there is a move towards the more natural and organic in the area of personal care products. There are good products to be found, but it is important to "read labels" and know what to avoid.
