Seraphina's Kitchen Says - Don't Let Fear Of Eating Fish Threaten Health Of Young Women And Children
Information published recently considers the impact of warnings, about mercury contained in fish, on the consumption of a food that has many health benefits.
Their advice, which is also backed by the Environmental Protection Agency, is that for health reasons these groups need to eat two to three servings a week of low-mercury fish.
According to the regulators, less fish is now being eaten because of previous advice telling young women and children to limit their fish consumption. This advice was given because fish contains methylmercury, which can cause brain damage. New research shows that more than one-fifth of pregnant women have not eaten fish in the last month, and many of the pregnant women who did eat fish ate less than two ounces a week.
However, not eating any fish is bad for health. Fish is a ‘superfood' which is packed with vitamins and minerals and contains oils that are good for the heart, including omega-3 fatty acids. There is evidence, too, that fish oils may be healthy for a baby's brain, and also help protect against cancer, asthma, depression and more.
"Fish is a delicious and nutritious food that can be quickly and easily prepared at home", says Monica Kaiser, Founder of Seraphina's Kitchen. "Our baking mats make baking fish so easy that you could have a nutritious meal on the table in about twenty minutes!"
Eating oily fish can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the chances of survival after a heart attack. Fish lowers the levels of fats called triglycerides in the blood, and it is raised levels of these fats that are associated with heart disease. Fish oils also appear to help reduce blood clotting and abnormal heart rhythms after a heart attack.
There is evidence, too, that polyunsaturated fatty acids found in many fish may prevent damage to brain cells and protect against Alzheimer's. Eating fish can also reduce the risk of high blood pressure, which is linked with dementia.
Studies have also shown that there is a much higher risk of developing prostate cancer for those who don't eat fish.
Most fish sold in the US is actually low in mercury, including shrimp, pollock, salmon, canned light tuna, catfish, cod, and tilapia. Fish that is high in mercury, which should be avoided by pregnant women and children, includes shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish from the Gulf of Mexico.
"As with most foods we just need to be aware of what to look for in order to provide high quality food for ourselves and our families", says Kaiser. "And by using a non-stick baking mat there is no need to add any oils when cooking a healthy fish dish at home".
