Blogging is a Powerful Tool for Organizations
A big part of the success of an organization depends on their ability to get the word out to the public. Blogs can dramatically improve communication with stakeholders and the public at large.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 12, 2008 ) Spencer, IA - Blogs represent power. In the age of the Internet, online publications like the Dickinson Country Clean Water Alliance blog (http://cleanwateralliance.net/blog/) gets out the news.
In the past, the organization depended on good relations with traditional media, and a combination e-mail and printed or electronic publications to all concerned informed. But, printed newsletters are expensive to produce, and e-mailed items run the risk of being neither received nor read. And, website by itself can’t always be updated as quickly as a group might like, and none of these provide the immediate attributes of a blog.
Because of the low cost, and ease of use, even the smallest organization is on a level playing field with the big organizatons, with more resources. This fact coupled with the reality that a single external blog can be maintained by one volunteer or staff member with a minimal skill set is what prompted the Dickinson Clean Water Alliance Coordinator, John Wills, to have a blog added when the organizations website was designed.
According to blog programmer Emily Boetel, “a volunteer need not even work on the blog in an office, he or she could just as easily work from home or elsewhere.” Since most blogs are user-friendly they are also a time saver.
A website is mostly a collection of documents. A library of sorts with pages/documents that don't change very often. Blogs are different. They evolve with every posting, each one tied to a moment. And these moments are open to the entire world to read.
Based in Fostoria, Iowa, one blog design firm, TotalWebDesigner.com, has been customizing public domain blogging software for clients for over 3 years now. This firm created the very first blog in the nation for a state Bed & Breakfast Association (www.iabedandbreakfast.com) and they have even customized a blog for the City of West Okoboji (http://cityofwestokoboji.org/blog/).
One Iowa community theater is having the firm design a blog for them. Jane Lawhead, the volunteer that is working directly with TotalWebDesigner.com’s team says, “our entire theater committee is thrilled with the blog. It is going to be a bit of a learning curve, but we will be able to have videos and featured photographs that scroll like a slideshow.” Lawhead traveled 6 hours to meet with the firm’s blogging instructor, Amelia Painter, so she could learn how to use the software. Painter will also be available to Lawhead by telephone for guidance during the first three months following the launch of the blog.
The success of a blog depends on the organization, the strength of a message and an organization’s sense of an audience. For this, you need a topic that people regularly search for that can be related to your organization, and you need someone posting daily or weekly. And while blogs are user-friendly, they still take work, time, and commitment.
