Lipitor Lawsuits Filed As A Result Of Type-2 Diabetes Contraction
According to court documents this is just one of many Lipitor lawsuits filed not only under MDL 2502 but in West Virginia, including two women who filed separate suits of their own in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, as a result of type-2 diabetes contraction. (Case Nos. 1:14-cv-11, 1:14-cv-1) Both of these Lipitor lawsuits claim that Pfizer either knew of the dangers, or should have disclosed to consumers that there was an adverse risk to diabetes. And the plaintiffs allege that Pfizer deliberately engaged in fraud by misleading users that Lipitor was safe. The West Virginia Record also reports a woman whose type-2 diabetes degraded to the point where she required cataract surgery to correct vision problems. She contends that she would have monitored her glucose levels, had Pfizer specifically warned her of the possible diabetic risks.

FDA Issued New Safety Labeling Requirements For Lipitor
In 2012, the FDA issued new safety labeling requirements for products like Lipitor. One of these label changes was specific for Pfizerís Lipitor drug. The requirements included posting statements of the possibility of increased sugar levels in the blood, otherwise known as hyperglycemia. This mandate came on the heels of numerous studies, including a University of Massachusetts Medical School study that revealed a higher rate of diabetes for post- menopausal women who have taken statin drugs (a class of cholesterol drugs that includes Lipitor), according to JAMA Internal Medicine. Furthermore, women who have used drugs like Lipitor have a nearly 50 percent risk of developing type-2 diabetes. This was a study that included over 150,000 women, with an average age of 63, who did not have diabetes. The study was conducted from 1993 to 1998, and after researchers followed up with the women years later, it was discovered that over 10,000 of them had contracted diabetes.

All Federal-Related Lipitor Lawsuits Consolidated Into Lipitor Lawsuit MDL No. 2502
The Judicial Panel of Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) agreed to a motion that allows all federal-related Lipitor lawsuits to be consolidated and relegated to the U.S. Court District of South Carolina. A motion for consolidation was denied a few months back, since there were only five cases pending at the time, but due to the onslaught of recent cases, the panel decided to reverse their decision. Under MDL #2502, there are 270 cases filed under consolidation, as of March 13, 2014 from the JPML website. These individual cases can be traced from states across the country, including West Virginia. One case from West Virginia that was transferred to MDL 2502 came from the Southern District of West Virginia. (No. 2:13-17178) All of these cases are pending, as more cases around the country continue to be classified under federal consolidation.
(In re Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Litigation, MDL No. 2502)
Lipitor is manufactured by Pfizer and has been prescribed by doctors to lower cholesterol in the blood (otherwise known as LDL). It also lowers triglycerides and increases good cholesterol (HDL-C). Lipitor acts as a blocking mechanism against an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol, therefore reducing the risk of heart disease and is used to help risk patients who are managing diabetes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Lipitor in 1996.
