ICC Prosecutor attends Commemoration in Geneva and meets Interpol Secretary General in Lyon

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 01, 2008 ) The Hague - ICC-OTP-20080901-PR348 ENG On September 1, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, will attend the special commemoration in Geneva to mark the fifth anniversary of the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on 19 August 2003. In the presence of United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon and Justice Navanethem Pillay, the newly appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, They will honour the memory of former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello, who lost his life in the August 19 attack.

“Sergio Vieira de Mello was born in Brazil but he represented people from all over the world. He worked in Cambodia, in Rwanda, in Kosovo, in East Timor, in Congo, in Iraq. He believed global institutions were necessary to achieve global peace. And he was killed for that. His legacy, and that of his colleagues lost with him, can only strengthen our collective determination to work for peace and justice.” The Prosecutor said.

On September 3, Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo, will proceed to a meeting with the Secretary General of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Ronald K. Noble in Lyon, France. The agenda will include several cooperation related issues, including sharing of information on international networks of criminality and execution of outstanding arrest warrants for the top LRA commanders in Northern Uganda, for Sudanese Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmad Harun and Militia/ Janjaweed leader, Ali Kushayb in Darfur, and for Bosco Ntaganda in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

While in Lyon, Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo will visit the Headquarters of the French Police Technique et Scientifique to thank them for their continued cooperation and assistance in the investigation of massive crimes worldwide.

‘The ICC does not have a police force of its own, but it can rely on the cooperation of recognised and experienced organisations, INTERPOL among them and on the police forces of 108 states parties, France among them’ said the Prosecutor

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes if national authorities with jurisdiction are unwilling or unable to do so genuinely. The Office of the Prosecutor is currently investigating in four situations: The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Northern Uganda, the Darfur Region of Sudan, and the Central African Republic, all still engulfed in various degrees of conflict with victims in urgent need of protection.
