The Two Secrets Of Soap Nuts
The New Old Way To Cleaner Clothes
Harvested, deseeded, and dried, the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi offers a very consistent, all natural and completely sustainable laundry soap. The fruit is similar to a cherry, in that it has a pit that is removed for two reasons. The first is to lessen the time it takes to dry the the fruit. The second is that it increases the amount of surface that the water can reach, which increases the amount of soponin that is released into the water. The name "soap nuts" refers to the look of the dried fruit, similar to a hazelnut shell that has been halved.
"Soaps and detergents work by using a surfactant to break the surface tension of the water allowing it to flow with more ease through the fabric, removing the dirt and oil. With soap nuts the surfactant is natural, rather than created with chemicals. When lye and fat are combined it creates soponin, or soap. With soap nuts the soponin is already there, no chemicals or additives needed. The processing is simply harvest, deseed, dry and use", says spokesperson Ann Stout for Petra Naturals.
The soap nuts are placed in a small drawstring bag, and tossed into the washer with the dirty laundry. Soponin, the natural soap, is released with agitation and moisture. Because they are low sudsing, they work great in a front loading washer, as well as the top loading machines. This bag of five or so soap nuts can be reused 7-10 times or until the nuts are gray, dull and thin. At this time, they can be composted.
The second secret of soap nuts is the fact that they remove the residue left from commercial detergents, leaving behind only soft clean fabric. There is no scent left on the clothing, as the soap nuts also remove odors. This quality makes soap nuts a fabulous choice for diapers and childrens clothing. No chemical residue to irritate the delicate skin of babies, and odor removing as well. Active sports wear lasts longer when consistently washed with soap nuts.
Because the soap nuts remove the chemical residue, and do not add to the toxins that are flowing through the water systems, they are a great step toward eco friendly living. Detergents are well known for the damage that they cause to our waterways. Soap nuts on the other hand are great for septic and gray water systems, as there is no residue left in the water that is harmful to the waterways. Environmentally friendly soap that grows on trees!
