Chicago Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard Finds Common Dryer Vent Hazards in New Cook County Homes
Many people are under the assumption that their newer home will contain fewer if any code violations and fire hazards
Many people are under the assumption that their newer home will contain fewer if any code violations that can be dangerous. Mory Matias, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard (http://www.dryerventcleaningchicago.net), recalls one dryer vent inspection he performed in a newer home. The customer was confident that everything was in compliance with current safety codes the home was less than one year old.
Mory looked behind the clothes dryer and he was happy to find that solid metal rather than corrugated plastic or vinyl was used for the dryer duct. The pieces were joined with metal tape rather than screws that protrude into the inside of the ducts to catch and trap lint. No violations so far, but what he found at the end was disturbing to say the least.
When he followed the duct he was shocked to discover that it went right into the attic. There was a pile of lint in the attic and he could see evidence of mold growing on the rafters. He explained to the customer that the mold would eventually cause the rafters to rot. In addition, mold spores in the home can be a health hazard. By law, a clothes dryer must be vented outdoors, especially a gas dryer which can be a carbon monoxide risk.
The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard explains the importance of properly insulating a dryer duct that goes through the roof to prevent condensation from running down and perhaps pooling behind the clothes dryer. It is also important to have the proper type of exhaust hood with a wide flange for dryers that are vented through the roof.
The best dryer exhaust system is made of solid metal, smooth inside, joined with metal tape and is as short and straight as possible. The longer the dryer exhaust pipe is, the more resistance there is to air-flow. Bends and turns add to the resistance. Proper air-flow is essential for a clothes dryer to work safely and efficiently, saving energy and preventing fires. Of course, even the state of the art dryer vent installed by the Wizard requires maintenance, so regularly scheduled dryer vent cleaning service is the best way to prevent dryer fires and maintain good dryer performance.
Mory Matias, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard provides dryer vent inspections, dryer vent cleaning, repair and new dryer vent installation in homes and businesses in the North Side Chicago area. He is happy to explain to his customers how their dryer vent system works and how to properly maintain the system between annual professional visits.
