Is High Visibility Pet Apparel As Safe As Manufacturers Claim?
The recent explosion in popularity of high visibility pet apparel has led many to wonder if wrapping your pet in a blanket of blaze orange or yellow actually increases safety, or if its just another marketing trick aimed at credulous consumers.
There's no doubt that those shiny vests worn by Cal-Trans employees save lives. California motorists indeed, motorists throughout the country have been programmed to respond to blaze orange vests, cones, and signs by slowing down and staying alert. By capitalizing on the responses already universally ingrained into motorists, one company has launched a line of reflective dog vests aimed at duplicating ANSI standards and providing similar safety for pets and their owners.
At present, reflective clothing for pets is not required to meet any existing ANSI certifications, leading to a broad selection of products utilizing the term "safety." SJS Enterprises, a California-based company owned and operated by pet enthusiasts, is one of the few manufacturers out there taking safety dog vest certification seriously. Their new flagship product, the SafetyPUP XD, is a line of high visibility reflective dog vests incorporating many of the features found in ANSI-certified work clothing.
"We built the SafetyPUP XD hi vis dog vest after analyzing the high vis clothing worn by road and construction workers in [California]," states the VP of product development for SJS, Shem Swerkes. "After settling on a fabric that's both strong and fluorescent, we added a generous application of reflective material for increased low-light visibility, just like the vests Cal-Trans workers wear."
Stacy McIntosh, CEO of SJS, adds that simply modeling the vest after existing high-vis products isn't enough SJS is now seeking ANSI certification of the SafetyPUP XD line. "It's a long process, but we're getting started." Why go to all the trouble? Why spend time and money seeking third party certification for a product that doesn't require it? "Simple we take the safety of our customers and their pets seriously. Getting ANSI certification is proof that we've gone the extra mile, and we think our customers will appreciate that."
Whether or not this process will lead to an increase in sales remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure once SJS receives ANSI certification, there will be no lingering doubts about whether or not their product offers a tangible increase in pet safety.
