14th Century Re-enactment at Chepstow Castle
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2001 ) Cardiff, South Wales, UK
Chepstow Castle throws open its doors this bank holiday weekend with a special fourteenth-century re-enactment display held as part of Cadw’s 2001 events programme.
The castle, one of the oldest stone built castles in the UK, will play host to re-enactment group the Company of Chivalry on Sunday May 6 and Monday May 7 from 12 noon until 4pm.
The Company of Chivalry specialises in portraying life in the turbulent fourteenth-century, and the castle will host a medieval encampment with soldiers in period costume displaying their arms, armour and other artefacts.
Both days’ events will involve marching, combat and cannon fire, while craftspeople, including leatherworkers, clothiers, and even a medieval physician, will be on site to discuss their skills.
Keith Allen, of Allen-Drake Management, which has organised the event on behalf of Cadw, says, “We’re delighted to be able to host this event at Chepstow, and are confident it will be a great day out for the whole family, with visitors having the rare opportunity of experiencing life in the fourteenth century. ”
Chepstow Castle, begun in the eleventh century by William Fitz Osbern, a companion of William the Conqueror, was amongst the first of Britain’s stone-built strongholds. Improved throughout the centuries right up to the Civil War and beyond, the castle we see today is an amalgam of different periods.
Ends
Admission to the event is included as part of the admission price.
The Company of Chivalry will also visit Kidwelly Castle on 26 & 27 August.
