Emergency Shelters Built By Six Local Governments In Michigan
Michigan counties and cities have developed their own emergency shelters because of the strong winds and harsh weather conditions experienced last November. The damage of the previous weather conditions costed millions of dollars.
Following this move, the counties have also worked on developing other training programs for emergency situations not directly related to weather. This includes training for strenuous situations such as vehicular accidents and hostage crises.
In line with this new plan of the counties to create temporary shelter for citizens in dire need, it is also recommended to prepare for any emergency situations. Residents are given advice on how to create emergency kits and what to include in them. The most important emergency materials include light sticks for temporary lighting, medicines and first aid treatments in case of injuries, bottled water and biscuits or canned food, and clothing materials in case of evacuation.
Light sticks are vital inclusions in emergency kits because it is inevitable to experience power outages during stormy seasons. These are the most potent temporary lighting solutions in lieu of flashlights and candles which require other elements to operate. Light sticks are also longer lasting and can be used to attract the attention of rescuers in case of accidents and stranded situations.
The counties have yet to start the new emergency shelter project but progress is expected in the first quarter of 2014.
