Recent Reports Show The Dangers Hidden In Glow Sticks
There Are Unsafe Chemicals In A Glow Stick
Glow Sticks In Action
According to Banner Poison and Drug Information Center, exposures normally occur when glow stick items are bitten into and then some of the liquid is either swallowed or splashed into the eye. When splashed on the eye, an extreme irritation is experienced. It is advised that you immediately rinse the affected eye with plenty of clean water. Dr. Jill Michaels, a clinical pharmacist and director of the Palmetto Poison Center at USC's South Carolina College of Pharmacy, recons that while glow stick chemicals may not have any long-term ill effects, a short-term burning sensation or vomiting may occur when these chemicals are ingested.
Children may bite or break the plastic that encases the glowing liquid inside of the stick. If this occurs, a risk of choking on a broken piece of plastic arises. If a child does bite the plastic casing, remove the glow stick and wash her mouth out with cold water. This eliminates the potential choking hazard and cleans out any liquid from her mouth before she can swallow too much.
Pets, especially cats and dogs that may have a tendency to play with glow stick by biting are also vulnerable to the effect of the glowing chemicals; they too will experience stomach upsets.
