New Year’s Resolution – How Omega 3 Fatty Acids Can Help You Lose Weight In 2014

The desire to lose weight consistently features as one of the top three New Year's resolutions. Many of us start the New Year resolute, as in previous years, that this year will be the year when we shed those unwanted pounds.
So why do we get to this place year after year? Although it is comforting to note that we are not alone in this (fewer than 9 percent of people manage to stick to their resolutions and those who don't usually quit after just one week) this should be a concern to us.
When we make resolutions they are usually connected to areas of our life that we believe are important for our well-being, development or peace of mind. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of South Australia showed a clear link between taking omega 3 fatty acids and losing weight.
The research involved 75 overweight and obese people who were split into four groups. The group which took omega 3 and exercised lost on average 4.5 lbs after 3 weeks. Apart from the exercise which, involved no more than three 45-minute runs each week at 75% of maximum heart rate, everything else about the subjects' daily routine and diets remained unchanged.
Whilst the medical experts agree that there is a need for more and wider-ranging research, there is hope that including omega 3 fish oil supplements in your diet will improve your chances of attaining your weight-loss aspirations in 2014.
Polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids are important for good health. They are the good fats found in fish and fish oil. Although they are essential for our survival because they form part of our cell membranes, the human body can't make them. We have to "top up" on a daily basis from our food intake.
Omega 3 fish oil works on several levels to help you lose weight:
• Minimize Fat Storage. One piece of research showed that including fish oil supplements as part of your daily diet can minimize the risk that the food you eat is stored as fat. The reason for this is that it increases your sensitivity to the hormone insulin. The more responsive your cells are to insulin, the greater the possibility that your body will convert your food into energy rather than store it as fat. Equally as important is the fact that insulin sensitivity reduces your chances of developing type II diabetes and the attendant problems that this disease brings.
• More Effective Exercise. Taking fish oil supplements has been shown in one study to boost weight loss. The volunteers in this research were separated into two groups; one group taking the supplements whilst those in the other group took only a placebo. Both groups ate less and worked out several times per week. The fish oil group lost more weight than the placebo group.
• Lose Fat & Build Muscle/ Decrease Appetite. Other studies have shown that taking fish oil supplements helps you to lose fat and build muscles as well as decrease your appetite.
