FEMA Awards nearly $1.3 Million to Orange County Sheriff’s Department

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 27, 2008 ) OAKLAND, Ca. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has committed $1,269,097 to assist the Orange County Sheriff’s Department with costs related to its emergency response to the Southern California wild land fires in October 2007.
The Orange County Sheriffs' Department staffed its emergency operations center, which also served as a command post for the incident command operations. Activation of the public information hotline occurred immediately. Numerous deputies mobilized patrols for fire watch, established evacuation routes, closed roads and provided traffic control. They also provided security at two Red Cross emergency shelters.
Total dollars committed to this grant equal $1,692,130. FEMA provides 75 percent of the total under its Public Assistance Grant program. Of the remaining costs, the state of California will cover 18.75 percent with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responsible for the balance.
FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides reimbursements to state and local government agencies and certain non-profits for eligible disaster-related expenses associated with debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure. Debris removal includes sample testing for hazardous debris, hazardous ash and tree removal and monitoring of debris loading, hauling and disposal.
