An Apple A Day Helps Keep The Dietician Away
A New “Twist” on a Favorite Fruit Helps Overweight Children to Eat Healthier and Lose Weight.
A medium sized apple has only seventy calories, which is three times less than a candy bar. Apples are also high in pectin, an indigestible soluble fiber that helps to promote a sense of fullness. This helps the child to control his appetite and not overeat. As an added bonus, pectin also helps to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol. A recent study published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that eating an apple a day lowered LDL levels by 40% compared to people taking a placebo. Not only are apples low in calories, they are also low in sodium, which will prevent excess water weight or retention.
Changing the eating habits of adults is hard enough, getting a child to give up sweets for a healthy fruit snack seems impossible. One company, Purelite Kitchen Tools, has taken on that challenge by introducing a new line of apple peelers designed for parents of young children.
Purelite representative, John Young, explains that children are naturally drawn to the fun, thinly sliced, spiral shaped apple pieces that the apple peeler/corer/slicer produces. "To change a child's eating habits, we have to get them on board by introducing a new fun approach to eating the old familiar apple. With the apple peeler, under adult supervision, children are able to have fun making the apple slices themselves by simply cranking the handle of the machine." It is the goal of Purelite to help educate the public on the healthy and fun alternatives to traditional junk food.
Purelite, based in Calabasas, California, is dedicated to introducing innovative, high quality kitchen tools to the home consumer market. Its most recent product is the Classic Apple Peeler available exclusively at Amazon.com.
