Small Vermont Town's General Store Starts "Stone Soup On Steroids"
Yummy Yammy and More Town Businesses to Give 1% of Sales to Area Food Shelf
'19 Days of Norwich, 1% for The Haven' started with Dan & Whit's, the general store in the heart of the village. After a customer mentioned to Dan Fraser that The Upper Valley Haven was consistently out of food this season, he decided to contribute 1% of the store's sales, from the days Dec 1 to Dec 19, to the non-profit. At that point, he decided to challenge all the businesses in town to participate too.
"When almost every business in town jumped on board, we realized that 1% was big when everyone was a part of it," explains Fraser. "We also realized that in order to make this work, we needed the support of everyone in town, so we enlisted everyone, and I mean EVERYONE!"
"It's true," reports Lisa Johnson, maker of Yummy Yammy® brand Sweet Potato Salsas. "I was shopping, and Dan walked right up to me with stickers, because he knew I'd want to be part of it. Of course, we're contributing 1% of our sales too -- instead of money, we'll give food, because we make great food."
"It's so inspiring to see what Dan has started. I think I'm living in the movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life'. One person can affect so many. It feels like Stone Soup on steroids around here," laughed Johnson.
At this point, Dan & Whit's has rallied not only just about every business in the town to contribute whatever is appropriate for them, but the banks, the churches, the fire station, police, library, non-profits, truly everyone is involved. Individuals, too: graphic designers, families who are making banners, anyone who wants to wear one of the bright yellow stickers promoting the movement. And even the town's Olympians and skateboarder Kevin Pearce are contributing to the auction. Currently, 73 contributing entities are listed on the facebook page promoting the effort, plus of course all the individuals involved.
"Norwich has created a unique situation, the first town where businesses would donate 1% of their sales to a non-profit," believes Dan. We can't wait to see the total donated by the 19th.
