(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 07, 2008 ) Royal Oak, Mich. – The Young Adult Council (YAC) at Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit will host a fundraising event on Friday, June 13, 2008 from 7:30pm – 10:30pm at the new BlackFinn Restaurant and Saloon in downtown Royal Oak.
For a $15 donation, guests can enjoy complimentary appetizers and half-price drinks, and also receive two raffle tickets for a chance to win great prizes, including gift certificates from
Hanson’s Running Shop, The Yoga Shelter, BlackFinn and more!
BlackFinn is located at 530 S. Main Street in Royal Oak.
The new YAC is a network of young adult professionals who will help raise awareness and funds for Gilda’s Club, a cancer support organization. Targeting ages 18-40, the Young Adult Council will focus on reaching out to young adults in Metro Detroit to promote the programs and services available at Gilda’s Club for this population. The YAC also will encourage greater involvement in volunteerism and philanthropy through networking and fundraising events, special educational programs and other opportunities.
Gilda’s Club currently includes 89 young adult cancer survivors and 146 young adult family members in its 3,000-plus membership.
The first event hosted by the Young Adult Council in April raised almost $1,500 for the young adult programs at Gilda’s Club. Upcoming events include a meet n’ greet at a local park,
poker tournament and movie night.
Membership to the Young Adult Council is open to any person ages 18-40 interested in supporting Gilda’s Club. Members must commit to one year of volunteer service on the council. While two of the executive committee members are cancer survivors and members of Gilda’s Club, it is not a requirement.
Corey Perlman, a member of the Young Adults Council, says "Its been an honor and a privledge to work with such a great group of people and such a worthy organization. Our group is focused on getting the message out to the community about the valuable resources Gilda's Club provides. And the icing on the cake is how much fun we have in the process."
Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit is a free, non-residential cancer support community for men, women and children affected by cancer. The organization offers emotional and social support through programs such as support groups, educational programs, yoga, music and many other activities. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2008, Gilda’s Club was named in honor of the late comedian and former Detroiter, Gilda Radner. Visit www.gildasclubdetroit.org for more
